Wild Clay mug, 13oz
Wild Clay mug, 13oz
Made from clay dug from my farm in Saskatchewan. The numbers on the stamp indicate the source of the clay: a connection to the land.
13 oz mug with squared handle for comfortable 3 or 4-finger grip. The inside of these mugs are plain (no texture).
The glaze is also made from the clay itself - mixed with water and powdered glass (frit), the mixture fuses to the clay in the high temperature of the kiln and makes a smooth surface. Glaze colour varies slightly from a blueish hue to a greenish hue.
Measurements: 3.75” / 9.5cm tall, 3” / 8.5cm across
Artist's Notes:
I now live in BC, Canada, but I’ll always be a Saskatchewan farm kid! Thank you for taking a look at my experiments. It took 2 years to figure out how turn this Saskatchewan mud into a mug, and I’m so happy to share the results with you. When working with this Saskatchewan soil, I like to leave a lot of the raw clay exposed, so we can see and feel the character of the clay itself. The colour varies from a shiny brown with white specks, to a matte reddish brown, depending on where the piece was in the kiln. The variance in the pieces is what makes this wild clay so dynamic and interesting to me.
I glaze the handles so they are comfortable to hold, and the insides so they are easy to clean. The bottoms have been sanded smooth so they don't scratch your furniture.
All my mugs start as hand-rolled slabs of soft clay and I shape them with the use of simple tools and sponges. I like to leave the joining seam visible, signaling that the pieces were not formed on the pottery wheel and have a unique relationship with my hands. My pottery is more lightweight than you might expect if you are used to using wheel-thrown pottery.
Food, microwave, oven, and dishwasher safe, but handmade pottery loves to be pampered with hand washing and gentle use :) The bottom of each piece has been smoothed with diamond sanding pads to prevent scratching your furniture.
